Sexual Violence And The Rise In The Rate Of Rape in Pakistan

By Muhammad Bilal

Around the globe, rape and sexual assault are happening everyday. Rape has become a global problem. The sexual violence has hit near a billion of women over life time. According to world health organisation (WHO), every one in three women are victims of it. South-East Asia is considered as the most affective part of the World as 37.7 percent cases from all over the World are reported from this region. Pakistan is one of the most affected and pompous country in which the rate of rape and sexual abuse is increasing day by day, which has lead the women and there families to  feel insecure. Most of the rape cases are reported from the Punjab as compared to other Provinces. Recently a women was travelling from Lahore to Gujranwala along with her children and on the way, her car stalled due to the shortage of petrol, she called the Motorway police for help but it was all in vain. At the same movement she was raped at gun point in front of her children. Despite finding the rapist, the Capital City Police Officer (CPPO) Lahore is blaming the victim for not checking petrol in the car before setting out for the journey. Unfortunately, it has not occurred for the first time, but i wish it to be the last.

Most of the case related to sexual assault are not reported which are also responsible for the increasing rate of rape. There are certain causes of the rapid increase of rape in Pakistan. Some of which are given bellow;

Family norms and standards in the vast majority of different communities and societies are rooted in such a way that a girl who is victimized of rape or her family members masks the incidence just because of the resultant dishonour in the society.
One of the main cause of the increasing rape rate is the unawareness of the consequences of rape.
Lack of sex education especially for minors is major cause of the increase in number of sexual assaults.
Mostly, the victim and his family do not know what to do after the accident?
Lack of registration of rape cases in the rural area is responsible for the increase in serial rapists.
One of the major and root cause of sexual assaults is that the rapist wants to show masculine dominancy.
Despite of overcoming the increasing rate of this wild termite, laws are inadequate, unclear, not systematically enforced and even sometimes the technicalities present in the law promote this unhuman act.
Rigidity in law.

Sexual violence and its causes leads the society to insecurity and has also a severe effect on children as well.  This serious violation of human rights needs attention of the government. The Government of Pakistan and the law enforcement institutions must practically implement Zainab alert bill passed by National Assembly of Pakistan and should frame a proper legislation regarding this issue. It is due duty of Government, teachers and parents to provide sex education to their children. Along with this, various seminars and awareness walks should be organised that how to protect yourself from these wild animals and what to do after being victimized. And the most important is that it needs serious debate on the main stream media. I will end with a Shakespearian quote; “The hell is empty and all the devils are here.”
