Floods in Afghanistan kills 151, injure at least 200

The Ministry of Emergency Situations has said that floods in 12 provinces of Afghanistan over the past two days have caused severe personal and financial losses to the people.

The floods hit Parwan, Kabul, Kapisa, Panjshir, Maidan Wardak, Nangarhar, Paktia, Paktika, Logar, Nuristan, Laghman and Khost provinces due to heavy rains.

He added that the numbers are not final and may change.

The floods have caused the most casualties and financial losses in Parwan province.

Abdul Khalil Haidari, chief physician at the Parwan Civil Hospital, told that four 93 and 103 wounded had been taken to hospital.

Mohammad Qasim Haidari, Deputy Minister of State for Disaster Management, said rescue and relief operations are underway in all flood-hit provinces.

Ahmad Tamim Azimi, a spokesman for the ministry, said 1000 flood-affected families in Parwan were in urgent need of humanitarian assistance and that food and drinking water had been provided to 4000 people in the province who were at high risk of health problems.

The ministry warned that heavy rains are expected in 13 provinces in the coming days.
